Most small radio's can be powered either by AAA- AA- 9V- or rechargeable cell phone batteries.
You loose your portability when depending on AC power. AA batteries are the most common.

I like Ito take a receiver with me when I travel so that I can keep up on local and international news. One of my receivers even has a weather band built into it. Listening to a local radio station can give you a feeling for the town and if there is a special event happening or a dangerous weather situation.
